In weight lifting, bars are basic accessories you need for resistance training and body building. Usually mounted with weight plates and used with power racks or weight lifting benches, they need to be of the best quality possible to endure long-time usage and to serve their purpose well. Weight lifting bars come in different sizes, designs, and types. Weight plates are usually attached to them using clamps of collars to provide for a safe and efficient body workout.

Types of Weight Lifting Bars

Straight bar. The straight bar is the simplest of weight lifting bars. If you are planning on setting up a personal fitness studio at home, you need a durable and dependable straight bar for your barbell workouts. A straight bar also makes it possible to perform a wider selection of exercises.

The average length for these standard bars is between 5′ and 7′. When buying a straight bar to be used in conjunction with a power rack at home, make sure it fits the space between the bar holding pegs perfectly. Straight barbells, which put your wrists at a 180-degree angle with palms up, are proven to be effective in strengthening and developing the biceps.

EZ curl bar. EZ curl bars are commonly used in commercial gyms today. They are easier to handle with your wrists at a 135-degree position and your palms at a 45-degree angle. It offers great comfort for weight lifters although it is not expected to yield the same results as when you use the standard straight bar. The exercises you may perform using the EZ bar is also limited.

An EZ curl bar is easier to manipulate because instead of being straight, it has characteristic bends or a bit zigzag in shape. It is commonly used in performing upper body exercises like arm curls and triceps extensions.

Tricep bar. Weight lifting bars designed for exercises targeting the triceps muscles are called tricep bars. Usually measuring 34" long, a tricep bar is an oval-shaped contraption with two parallel bars within. The parallel bars serve as hand grips for weight lifting exercises using a tricep bar. As with other weight lifting bars used in the gym, weight plates are also attached on both ends of a tricep bar. Bar clamps secure them in place.

The triceps are the muscles found along the back of the arms just below the deltoids. This muscle group may not be as prominent as the biceps but strengthening them is equally important. Stronger triceps make it easier for weight lifters to do bench presses. Well-developed triceps also improve the shape of the upper arms.

Dumbbell handles. Enhance the versatility of dumbbell with durable dumbbell handles. Buy dumbbell bars that allow for quick replacement of weight plates so that transitions between exercises are smoother. Dumbbell bars made available today come with no-slip grip feature for better handling during workouts.

There are also Olympic equivalents for the abovementioned weight lifting bars. Weight plates for these bars have 2"-diameter holes in the middle as opposed to the 1"-diameter in standard bars.
